CHILDHOOD FOR ATHEN BOYS.

• Okay so I was a very surprised when I learned  what young boys do at an early age. So what I learned was that around 7-years-old, boys leave their home. They leave their home to go to a children's military school. While there, they learn how to use a sword properly, and how to protect themselves. They were starved so they were forced to steal food. If they were caught with the food that they stole, they were badly punished. Boys stayed at the school until they were 13-years-old. Any way lets go back to the swords. Working with a sword can be very dangerous if you don't know how to use one right. You could get hurt very badly. I wouldn't want to do that in a million years.  I mean like, what kind of person would tell a 7-year-old child to come work with swords. How do you feel about that?

OMG ITS THE NILE!!!!!!

I'm writing about the Nile. The Nile helped the Greeks in many ways. The Nile gave them food and water in the summer and winter all year long. Once a year the Nile would flood. This means that it would contain so much water that it went over the land. When this happened the land got soaked ...and became rich in soil for the Greeks to plant crops. That it what it was like for the Greeks not so bad huh, could you go without electronics, ice cream, and all of your joys for one week?

The navigator and astronomer Phytheas were the first Greek to observe and explain ocean tides, in the Atlantic in the early third century BCE.  He was 2,000 years ahead of his time, for it took that long for tides to be attributed (by Newton) properly to the influence of the moon.  Until Newton's time, most scholars refused to believe that the moon could have any effect on the ocean, especially because one tide each day took place when the moon was not even visible in the sky.

Medusa and Her Snake Crew

Medusa was not the only ugly goddess. Did you know that she had three sisters? Ya...neither did I. Their name’s are Stheno and Euryale. They are all of the same parents too. They were daughters of Phorcys, who is a sea god and Ceto. Also, Medusa is not the only one that has nasty snakes for hair in fact they all did. They also shared some other pretty weird features like scales, brass hair, and even...beards.

Medusa was the only one of her sisters that was mortal. That's why when she was beheaded by the hero Perseus she actually did die. So if you were face to face with Medusa and her three sisters...what would you do?

The story of Poseiden and Athena A.K.A The Story Of Athens

Did you know that the Greeks were Polytheistic? Well, they were! The gods family tree was REALLY messed up! Here is the link! Also, the two Greek gods Poseidon and Athena don’t like each other because there once came a time in Ancient Greece when the first king of Athens, Cecrops, who was half person and half snake, had to find a patron deity for the city state of Athens. The two Olympian gods who were particularly interested in the patronage.They presented themselves in front of Cecrops he asked from them to offer a gift truly valuable for Athens.Poseidon went first: he struck the earth and created a well with his trident. Immediately, streaming water shot forth, but the water turned out to be salty and not very useful.Next,Athena stepped forward, struck her spear into the ground and then she kneeled and planted an olive branch in it. This way she created an olive tree, as a symbol of peace and prosperity on Earth. Cecrops was very impressed by Athena’s gift. So he chose Athena to claim the city of Athens and the city was named after her.Poseidon got mad and cursed the land with a water shortage that still lasts today!What is your favorite story of Greece?

Alexander the Great

      Alexander the Great was born in 356 B.C. in Pella, Macedonia. At the age of 20 Alexander formed forces in Greece and he was named their leader. He soon after invaded the Persian and the Egypt empire and defeated them. He became the king of Macedonia from 336 to 323 B.C. While king he established many cities that were then named after him. He took over many empires and never lost a battle. But only 13 years after he became king he had died and the empire started to decline. Alexander died at a very young age and is unfortunate don't you think?

The Hills are Alive with the Sounds of Greeks

The theatre arts began in Greece when the people worshiped and had festivals for their many gods. They honored one of their gods, Dionysus with a festival called  "City Dionysia". Especially in Athens men would sing and present plays to welcome Dionysus.This tradition was spread around to their allies becoming very important to the Greeks. Later almost every Greek city had a theater on a hillside that could have up to 15,000 people there in audience. Although you make think the Greeks were just about seriousness and most of their performances were , but surprisingly their plays were often humorous. The actors were all boys/men who wore masks, wigs, thick soled shoes and goat skin coats. Even though the plays that are put on now are very different from the original ones in Greece that's where it all started. Thank you Greeks!
