Legends associated with Nag Panchami (Snake festival)

There are many legends associated with the festival Nag Panchami ( Snake festival). The primary legend associated with Nag Panchami being that on the day of Nag Panchami Lord Krishna defeated the dreaded serpent Kalia. Also on the day of Nag Panchami the Sarpa Satra Yajna being done by Janamejaya, the son of King Parikshit of Kuru dynasty was stopped on behest of Goddess Mansa Devi and her son Astika. Another legend goes that once a farmer while ploughing his field on Naag Panchami and by mistake killed young hatchlings of a snake. To avenge the death of her young ones the mother snake bit all but the young daughter of the farmer. When the snake went to bite the daughter of the farmer, she found her praying to the Nag Devta, seeing which the snake blessed the daughter and spared the life of the farmer's family.
