Festivals In Nepal

There are many different festivals in Nepal. From all of the fantastic ones, I picked two that I found the most interesting. One of which is called Holi. It is a very colourful and playful festival. Holi celebrated in the Terai on one day, and in Kathmandu and the hill regions on the next day. People smear coloured powders on their friends, relatives, and family members, and throw coloured water and water balloons. It’s important not to take any valuables out with you on this day because no one wants to have paint all over their belongings. Well, unless they are sealed in a plastic bag! Next festival I found very interesting is Gai Jatra, which after translation means literally "festival of cows".The oldest reason for the festival incorporates a cult and a worship of the ancient god of death – Yamaraj. The festival's purpose is to celebrate death in a positive way. Every family who has recently lost a member is supposed to decorate a cow and lead it through the city. For each lost male, the oldest boy in the family dresses as a cow. For each female, the youngest one gets to dress up. They can then take on the role of the lost family member. Both of those festivals are very meaningful to the people of Nepal. If you could, would you participate in either? I think it would be a pretty great learning experience, as well as lots of fun!
