இனிய பொங்கல் Pongal: The Food and Festival

A holiday that is very important in South Indian culture (and one that my family and I celebrate) is the festival known as Pongal. Pongal honors farmers and animals like goats and cows; it's also dedicated to the sun god Surya and corresponds with the harvest festival known as Makara Sankranti. During Pongal, farmers will bathe their animals and smear paint all over them. Pongal lasts 4 days, and those days are Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal, & Kaanum Pongal. The traditional food eaten during Pongal is a boiled rice and milk-based food known fittingly as pongal. This is because rice is the main crop in South India. There are 2 kinds of pongal: venn pongal, which is savory and is cooked with spices, nuts, and butter, and chakara pongal, which is cooked with sugar and is eaten as a dessert. Pongal is traditionally cooked outside in large clay pot. What traditional food does your family eat during holidays?

  1. This is a very interesting writing. The culture is full of amazing colors and art. I think that you would like sophia's festival of lights post because your is really related to it. Don't You think so. Yours talks about a huge festival and the festival lights is one itself. Even though hers is about Diwali and yours is about india they have a lt in common.

  2. I like the way you formatted and wrote this piece. I learned a lot in your post. For example, I learned that Pongal is a legitimate day in Tamil culture. Second of all, I learned that it is celebrated to honor farmers and their animals. This post is very similar to Ben Wei's post about Dashain. I encourage you to read it and learn. They both have a lot in common although they are celebrated in different countries. Keep up the good work!
