Shivaratri

Shivaratri, meaning the night of Shiva, is celebrated amongst many Hindus around the world. Shiva is the Hindu god of destruction(destroyer of evil) and is prophesied an end to life as we know it with his powerful dance. He is also one of the major three gods. While there may not be as much of a hype here, the real festivals take place in India. There are many cultural and traditional aspects involved in this festival that originated from many, many legends as to why we celebrate Maha Shivaratri. These traditions might vary from family to family, but the most common ones include offering water, milk, and flowers to Shivalingam also known as Shiva's icon. Another aspect of Shivaratri is the fasting. I feel like all of these festivals and their aspects are important especially to young people like me who grew up in a totally different country because it gives us a chance to connect with our heritage. What are your thoughts on Shivaratri?
