Aluth Avurudda

In Sri Lanka every year around April 13th, the Sinhala people celebrate Aluth Avurudda, also known as Sinhalese New Year.  It is a major anniversary celebrated by not only the Sinhalese people, but by most Sri Lankans. During the new year, the Sri Lankans do activities like games, family gathering, family meal, visiting friends and relatives, and prayer. Another new year celebration observed in Sri Lanka is the Tamil New Year, better known as Puthandu. During the Tamil New Year the Sri Lankans feasting, gift-give, and visit homes. The Sri Lankans celebrate their new year around April 13th, because it would be the month of the Chitterai. I would love to go to Sri Lanka and celebrate both of these festivals. Which new year would you rather celebrate?

  1. Did you know that The Sinhalese New Year is one of the only big holidays celebrated by the Sinhalese people? The holiday began back in Sri Lankan history. Various beliefs started this celebration by bringing their own customs, rituals and ceremonies. The majority of them were Buddhist and that religion has stuck with Sri Lanka. I think that you should read Taya’s blog post. Taya’s is about the festivals in Pakistan. Unlike the few celebrations in Sri Lanka there are many in Pakistan.
