The Ancient Olympics

The Olympics were held to honor their gods, and the Isthmos games were staged every two years, while the Pythians games were staged every four years like now. These games started at about 700 B.C. and women could not watch. Only Greek Nationals could participate and were usually extended from one day Olympics to five days. In Olympia, where the Olympics were held, stood a statue 42 feet high in a temple. It was a statue of Zeus, made of gold and ivory. What do you think of the ancient Olympics?

  1. Michelle, I really liked your post. I didn't know that the statue of Zeus was made out of gold and ivory. To answer your question, I think the Olympics were really unfair, it's absolutely nuts that women couldn't watch it. That's one thing I didn't like about ancient Greece, women were treated differently than men. Could women play in the Olympics?
