Plagued by War

The Peloponnesian War was waged by the Spartans against Athens. The war went on for 27 years and so it was divided into three phases, The  Archidamian War, The Sicilian war and The Decelean War. Sparta started the war because the Spartans feared that the Athenians were growing powerful. Athens ruled over most of the region, so Spartans did what they know best and started a war. During the war, the Athenians caught the plague, losing ⅓ of their troops. After that, the Athenians never regained the lost number of troops and later the Athenians backed out from Greek mainland, due to an enormous attack by the Spartans. How many people do you think died in a war that lasted 27 years?

  1. Nikita, 43,000 Greeks ,40,000 Sicily, 15,470 Hoplites, along with at least 12,600 from the poorer Thetic class. Therefore, an average of 111,070 were killed. It's amazing how many lives were lost because of fear! Great Job on your blog and it provided a lot of insight.

  2. In a war that lasted 27 years i would guess that 10,000 people died. This is just a complete guess but i’m hoping that i’m in the ballpark of the right number. After I approximately 7,000 people died in the war against sparta and Athens. I was about 3,000 people off of the death number. How many people did you guess that died in the war?
